In this video, I try online thrift shopping for the first time! To be honest, thrift shopping is hard. You never know what you’re going to find and sifting through everything can take a long time and you still don’t know how it’ll look. ThredUP makes it so so much easier to narrow down what you’re looking for and in the right sizes.

I'm Molly, a typical sushi, makeup, and fashion loving millennial girl who just so happens to be blind! I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at just 4 years old and began public speaking at age 5. I started just doing motivational speaking, but now I make videos and even model! Even though I can’t see, I know that there are bright spots in everything we face. Let’s find them together. 💕

    • @morgan maresh you can sell clothes through ThredUp. I've sent clothes multiple times and have gotten decent payouts from them. I sent 2 packages of clothes in late May and early June and paid for expedited service on the one went in June but didn't so that for the one sent in May and my items just finally went up for sale about 3 weeks ago. Their processing time is extremely slow and while you have control oflver how the items are priced, you don't get to assist with or modify the categorization, descriptions, sizing of your items and I've had several items listed incorrectly (wrong brand, girls clothing listed as ladies and vice versa, full length tops listed as cropped, and other similar errors) and those are somewhat difficult to get fixed. They will donate any of your items that aren't accepted and any that don't sell during the allotted time period. If you just want to donate clothes and don't care about the small commission, I'd recommend donating somewhere locally instead.

    • @Cbbartelt The restocking fee is $1.99 per item, but if you're returning multiple items, that adds up SUPER quickly! Years ago, they didn't have a restocking fee and the process was so much better. I used to really like ThredUp but it's just so difficult to shop them now, especially with such a high restocking fee, I will only buy items from brands I know for sure fit me. If it were $1.99 per order, I'd be ok with it, but per item it's just way too much. You also have to pay for shipping ($8.99) if you want an actual refund to your original payment method. A free shipping label will only get you store credit. So I'm with you, while you're technically allowed to return items, there is a pretty high cost associated with it and many people simply can't take that kind of chance when buying clothes.

    • I’d be curious how ThredUp compares to TheRealReal, which is an online designer brand thrift shop. TheRealReal usually includes descriptions of any (if any) flaws in the clothing, but I’ve been too chicken to find out how accurate those descriptions are.

  • I'm really glad Molly got to somewhat experience thrifting since she hasn't been able to before. However, these prices are not normal thrift prices, and they are certainly not affordable for the majority of people who thrift. Generally, thrifting is for people who cannot afford to shop for these things at normal prices, let alone the inflated prices of the things in this video. ThredUp is not a "thrifting" store, its a discount store. I get it, thrifting it seen as trendy and its a fun experience if you're just doing it for fun, but the reality is most people aren't thrifting for fun, they're doing it because they have too and prices like these are harmful to that.

    MsSmile300MsSmile300Vor Monat
  • Question- when you say you love the color, what do you mean? Is it because you haven’t always been blind so you know what they look like or is there something more? I’m so curious to learn more so hopefully I worded this right!

  • Ngl, I'm glad you had a good time thrifting, but I feel like if you are searching for specific brands that are expensive to begin with it kinda misses the mark for me. When I think of thrifting I think about trying to find cute unexpected and cheap finds. Things that are so cute and so cheap that you just can't not buy them. I have never been someone who was willing to spend crazy money on clothes though, and tbh I think big brands are just a rip off. They are just trying to trick rich people into wasting their money while simultaneously giving them something to feel better than everyone else for wearing.

    Katie ShanafeltKatie ShanafeltVor Monat
  • For the romper with the shear on the front, I would recommend going with the fact that it's see through and wear a cute black lace bralette with it as I don't think there would be a good comfortable bra to wear that wouldn't be visible.

  • If I want an expensive item I always buy it second hand. I think the most i spent on a second hand item was $70 for a super cute kate spade tote bag and wallet that would have cost me around $300 new. The most i ever spent on clothing in general was my wedding dress i was going to buy a $100 dress but I fell in love with a super detailed blush pink dress and spent like $600 lol

Their clothing is very organized, the woman's tops are categorized by style (long sleeve, short sleeve, sleeveless, active, plus so much more) then organized by size then by colour. So you can shop very specified. Hope this helps.

I’ve gotten a couple pieces from them when they were having a sale I’m pretty sure the whole site was 70% They don’t have sales often but if you do buy from them definitely wait for a sale! It’s annoying how high the prices were on thred up especially if the clothes are used and people actually think it’s a good deal. And not just with wild fox, most of these things they sell you can get from the actual stores when they have sales and it’ll be cheaper

  • Hmm the prices seem awfully expensive for thrifting. If your wanting to give online thrifting another try Molly, I was just thinking that it might be worth checking out eBay. That way you can again filter sizes & types of clothes, condition (new, as new, used) & you usally get a good description of the item (depending on the seller) but you could always message them for more info if not. I don't know what the US version of it's like, but I have great luck searching for all sorts of new or used items on there in the uk.

  • You shouldn't worry about feeling bad about not enjoying thrift shopping or leaving discouraged. Because honestly I think it takes a certain type of person to really be successful at thrifting. I cannot go into thrift stores and come out with big hauls. Or the find of a lifetime. I find it very hard and frustrating. Even if the particular store is very organized you are still dealing with the fact that you don't know how the previous owner washed the garment. It may say your size but when you put it on, you find it has been stretched out or shrunk in such a way that it's useless for you. So me personally I don't do much thrift shopping because I usually end up leaving discouraged or frustrated. But I know there are people that are amazing at it. And kudos to them.

  • I'm 4'8 - 4'10 depending on where I'm measured. I'm a medium on top. In the juniors department, I'm an XL - XXL. Always had broad shoulders. Still working on body confidence. Thrifting for pants is tricky because of length. Sometimes I have luck and they actually r a good length. I got a romper from some store this summer and it needs to be altered. The one thing I have luck finding sometimes is shoes and purses. I found a purse that looked almost brand new Victoria's Secret bag. It is a metallic silver and has a chain strap. It still had the silica packet inside. The shoes r a tiny bit harder to find. I fit in womens and kids shoes

It's still a good idea as with any thrifted items there's always a small chance you might be bringing in bed bugs. Shipping to canada is also quite pricey and you may have to pay customs, so that all adds up fast for Canadian customers
