I'm Molly, a typical sushi, makeup, and fashion loving millennial girl who just so happens to be blind! I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at just 4 years old and began public speaking at age 5. I started just doing motivational speaking, but now I make videos and even model! Even though I can’t see, I know that there are bright spots in everything we face. Let’s find them together. 💕

  • I was bullied in school too. I always just went trick or treating with my brother and sister. I never even thought about going with my bullies. No wonder you had a bad time. I just like decorating for Halloween. I love Fall. I take my kids trick or treating, but I'm not into that part of it myself.

  • I have never been trick or treating with a friend. Most of my friends live too far away to go trick or treating (plus it's not like they ever asked me to go with them) and I have a lot of siblings, so I just went with my siblings. As a lonely person, totally get that being hard for you. i don't really like Halloween either.

  • YES YES YES YES YES THIS!!! I was born visually impaired. My vision is such that I pass as sighted easily in familiar areas. Trick-or-treating wasn't familiar areas. I was bullied and not popular, so I only really went with my cousins who were forced to go with me, and they'd always run away from me with their friends. I didn't get a cane until I was 12, and I hated walking in the dark so much.. I got so terrified that I'd just freeze up. My mom had to drag me trick-or-treating every year. Also, I couldn't recognize anyone in their costumes, so I couldn't run to catch up to them in the crowds. Even if the "crowd" was only like 2 other groups of kids. And I don't have peripheral, so it's very very easy to sneak up on me. I always tell parents of VI kids to bring their cane even if the kid doesn't want to use it. I also tell them to always make kids introduce themselves (If they're going trick-or-treating with Mary Sue, point them out and say "Mary Sue is dressed as a princess in a pink dress. Mary Sue, can you say hi so BlindKid knows where you are?") Yes, this can be embarrassing, but it's way less terrifying. Finally, don't sneak up on your blind kids on halloween. Their friends will do it. Their siblings will do it. Make sure there's someone that they feel safe around. Make that person you. Parents ask me, "Should we just skip halloween then?" and I always say to give it a shot if the kid wants to do it. Because I loved the costumes too! I loved dressing up. I loved the games. I loved the candy. Don't take that away from a kid; just make it accessible! My brother's bday is also near halloween (the 23rd), so I had lots of fun doing halloween birthday stuff with him as kids. And I loved handing out candy. I wish I would've been more open with adapting for myself at that age, because I think it would've been way more fun for me to hand out candy all night and get a reward of candy afterwards instead of being scared for my life for a couple of crappy chocolates. But hey, you live and you learn. Now as an adult, I watch non-scary halloween movies and eat candy on halloween night. And that's all I need or want to do honestly.

  • First of all, my Halloween was no different, I stayed home, had an early night with a book a few cats and a bag of lollies (candy). Second of all, you would love Australia. No one trick or treats, there is Halloween in most shops but most people don't do anything for Halloween. Some people use it as an excuse to have a party or dress up and go out, but most people ignore it. (plus we have California weather, and plenty of beaches for you to mermaid at)

  • Too bad you didn’t live when I lived because we would’ve been friends if I would’ve known you and I would’ve helped you I was the type of child that hung around people that nobody wants to be around. My mother raised me to care about other people and their feelings. And so I really really struggle with getting into because they made fun of my nose I was going to school with all black kids and I want to be friends I want not prejudiced at all I was a sweet loving child. I smiled all the time. The first time I went to private school they call me Pinocchio nose because my nose is big but not real huge. I want to let you know that other people have the same problems about Halloween I love Halloween for one reason I got to be with my dad my dad took us out every year for Halloween that’s the only time he did any interaction with us like this except for taking us to the dentist.Have a blessed day and night

I only ever went with my dad and then when I was a bit older I took my younger brother out alone...but I never thought of trying to go with other kids. I didn't really have friends. The one I did have used a walker during elementary school so she didn't really trick or treat much. Sorry it was so traumatic for you. Offer a non food take away,(rubber ducks) on a contact free table, and very sealed peanut and gluten free candy spaced to allow only touch what you take. • I hope you can reclaim Halloween for yourself because you would SLAY Halloween with your stylish ways . But I can understand why it could be hard 💜 I was bullied growing up as well and often times more on Halloween now that I look back on it, I guess I just kept a positive attitude and enjoyed dressing up and candy and pumpkin carving at home - things that couldn’t be controlled by others. I think everyone “Halloweens” differently too especially in adulthood and that’s ok. You deserve to at least have a special night of self care .. maybe wine and a nice podcast or movie . The last thing you want to do on a day you already hate is sit around feeling bad. I personally have done a ton of faking it until I make it in life and decided to like things others enjoyed even when I never seemed to get to have the same fun or traditional experiences that they had. I used to HATE school and was very traumatized by going to school but now I choose to go to school online and I now LOVE school because I found out it was the way in which I attended that made me hate it due to various reasons . I guess what I’m trying to say is I feel your stance in Halloween and it’s valid but I do honestly believe you can enjoy it one day if you figure out how to make it fun for you 💜

Once we got older and this kinda went away, Her parents actually got divorced, and the whole thing just makes me sad now. I havent enjoyed it since. But then I realized that that would be really disrespectful to people in that situation and would disregard the struggles they face *facepalm*

A lot of kids got to go home to their family while I got to stay there and only got one or two presents that were like socks or something from the dollar store and all the kids at school would show off their presents and I couldn’t. Even as an adult now I always get depressed and emotional. This year I have two foster kids and I’m going to make it the best Christmas they’ve ever had. The oldest (4) asked me yesterday if we were gonna have a tree and I told him yes of course and he told me he never had a tree before. 😭 I’m getting the biggest tree that will fit in my apartment and getting a little train to go around it.

  • To be honest.... I don't get it. Maybe it's a cultural thing where Halloween was a big social thing where you grew up but it never was for me. I always went Trick or Treating with my parents and the only Halloween parties were at school where we just dressed up in costumes and ate snacks while watching a movie (usually Charlie Brown). I was also bullied and didn't really have friends but it was never really affected any way by Halloween so I guess it's just strange to me that it was such a traumatic experience for you. The way you described how you can't escape Halloween is how I feel about Christmas. Everything revolves around it for 2 months before the holiday and I hate it. I've never liked Christmas but I've made a point to try and enjoy it more every year and I'm slowly making progress. Maybe that's something you could do with Halloween? Find the things you do enjoy and make your own traditions. I understand trauma isn't that easy to get rid of but I also feel like just shutting down and trying to avoid it/pretend it doesn't exist is making it worse. You're grown up now. You have friends. Make new memories to replace the bad ones.

I'm becoming more vision impaired and i'm so over whelmed on what's the next I should do. I know at one point i'll become blind due having glaucoma. My famiyiinly wants me to become more self-sufficient and not be relying on them. For example, they're not living close to me or something should happen to them. I'm wondering what the heck to do. Omg..I feel like chicken with her head cut off right now. It probably doesn't help I just got off the phone with family making me feel like i'm in a panic because I haven't done anything to prepare myself. I wonder if anyone else feels like this? People put on fur costumes and huge wooden masks that are really scary and they have birches to hit people with. There are whole festivals where they show off the costumes and then the barriers are put away and they can run around, chase people and hit them and stuff. I'm still sooo scared of that. And the worst thing is, its not just one day. Its like three weeks.
