I'm Molly, a typical sushi, makeup, and fashion loving millennial girl who just so happens to be blind! I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at just 4 years old and began public speaking at age 5. I started just doing motivational speaking, but now I make videos and even model! Even though I can’t see, I know that there are bright spots in everything we face. Let’s find them together. 💕

  • To celebrate Juneteenth I wanted to share the full length interview I did with the amazing Thando Hopa. I met Thando back in January at the World Economic Forum and shared cutdown of this interview on IGTV and Facebook, but felt it was the perfect time to share the extended version here. I hope you enjoy hearing what she has to say! I am also going live at 2:30 PST today on my Instagram (@mollyburkeofficial) with my friend Lolo to discuss life as a Black woman with a disability and intersectionality. Come join our chat!

    • +mollyburkeofficial *Juneteenth is an American thing, precedented on the 19 June 1865 declaration of emancipation in Texas,* the westmost of the Confederate States of America, which didn't get word of the CSA's April 1865 dissolution prior to the Union occupation. 15 June 1863 was the publishment of the Emancipation Proclamation at Washington, DC.

  • I don't have albinism but I have really light eyebrows and hair. It's impossible to find brow products for my brow color. It just doesn't exist. Society just expects you to make your brows darker if you want to define them and you're light blonde. I can't even tell you how many makeup artists have recommended dark eyebrow products to me in makeup stores. "No, that's the right color for you", "we don't have that kind of shade because you have to darken your eyebrows to define them with your coloring", "the color Taupe will be perfect for you. It's a few shades darker than your hair so that's perfect!" "well, you have to darken your eyebrows otherwise people can't see them" All. The. Time. What on earth is wrong with light eyebrows? I've been walking around with these brows my whole life so why would my eyebrows need to be more "visible" now? Why can't I just enhance the shape and fill in the gaps without changing the color of my eyebrow hairs?

  • This is so important. My best friend was told she had to straighten her curly hair for a singing performance (against what she felt comfortable with), and she got the barrage of comments: “Wow you look so beautiful! Why don’t you do this more often?” It hurt her, because it’s like, do you not like how I look every other day? Do I have go through this damaging and time consuming process of straightening my hair every day to be noticed? It’s good to compliment someone on something they do with their appearance, but it’s so important to not invalidate who they are naturally, on an everyday basis.

  • This raises an interesting topic. Is race genetical or physical, she is a black woman as in she is related to black people, although her skin is white. I guess we identify them how they want to be identified.

  • This has been so interesting. I’m pale but not albino so there’s some things I can relate to but a lot more not. I can’t really tan but even then I assume factor 50 every so often is fine for me but for Thando it’s more important to wear sun cream. Plus albinism is not a black thing, it happens to all races!

  • I think the point about makeup colours is an interesting one. I have always thought about how they’re always expanding shade ranges, but never seem to create paler shades. As someone from a country where sun basically doesn’t exist, I have very pale skin! I have yet to find a shade that matches me well. I’d like to see more paler shades, but these days a person would get called racist for saying that, when it has nothing to do with race, but about being inclusive and thinking about the wide variety of people who exist in the world

    Lisa DawsonLisa DawsonVor 6 Monate
